Liquidation price calculator

Enter the side, the entry price, the leverage and the exchange’s maintenance margin. The calculator shows where an isolated position is liquidated, how far the price has to move to get there and what the same trade looks like at other leverage. Everything runs on the numbers you type.

Isolated margin, a position opened at the entry price. Fees and funding paid after opening move the real price.

For a specific exchange

Maintenance margin is the number most people have to guess. These two calculators take it from the exchange itself, market by market, and apply that venue’s own rules. To size the trade from its stop first, use the position size calculator.

The formula

An exchange closes a position once its margin plus the running profit or loss falls to the maintenance margin, the slice of the position’s value that has to stay funded. Solved for an isolated position opened at the entry price:

Long: entry × (1 − 1 / leverage) ÷ (1 − maintenance margin)

Short: entry × (1 + 1 / leverage) ÷ (1 + maintenance margin)

At 10x with a 0.5% maintenance margin, a long opened at $100 is liquidated at about $90.45, a fall of 9.5%. Cross margin uses the same equation with the whole account balance in place of the position’s own margin, which is why it sits further away. For the vocabulary, see liquidation in the glossary, and for how the two exchanges differ, how liquidation works on Hyperliquid and Lighter.

Questions people ask

A position is liquidated when its margin plus its running profit or loss falls to the maintenance margin. For an isolated long opened at the entry price that happens at entry × (1 − 1/leverage) ÷ (1 − maintenance margin), and for a short at entry × (1 + 1/leverage) ÷ (1 + maintenance margin).

The share of a position’s value an exchange insists stays funded. Fall below it and liquidation starts. Hyperliquid sets it at half the initial margin at a coin’s maximum leverage, 1.25% for a 40x coin such as BTC; Lighter publishes a maintenance fraction for every market, 1.2% for BTC at the time of writing.

Leverage decides how much margin backs the position: 10% of it at 10x, 2% at 50x. The price can move against you by about that much, less the maintenance margin, before the exchange steps in. At 10x with 0.5% maintenance a long is liquidated after a fall of roughly 9.5%.

Isolated margin puts a fixed amount behind one position, so only that amount can be lost. Cross margin backs every position with the whole account balance, which pushes the liquidation price further away but puts the full balance at risk.

Yes. Funding is added to or taken from your margin as it is paid, so a position that pays funding drifts towards liquidation over time and one that receives it drifts away. The funding rate calculator shows how much; trading fees do the same when the position is opened.

Exchanges liquidate on their own mark price, use larger maintenance margins for very large positions and count the fees and funding already paid. The calculator is an estimate: the position view on the exchange is the source of truth.
