What is an xpub? Watch-only Bitcoin, explained
The extended public key that derives every address in a Bitcoin wallet, what it makes possible, and the privacy trade it quietly carries.
Modern Bitcoin wallets do not have one address; they have a factory. Every receive generates a fresh address, all of them descend from one seed, and the bookkeeping object that ties the public side together is the extended public key, the xpub. It is the most useful Bitcoin concept most holders have never had to learn.
One key, every address
An xpub can derive every public address your wallet will ever use, without touching the private key side at all. Hand an xpub to watch-only software and it can compute your addresses, scan the chain for them, and total the balance, past, present and future addresses included. Spending stays impossible: derivation only runs on the public side.

- True watch-only wallets: the cold wallet stays offline forever while a phone watches its balance.
- Accounting that survives address rotation: new receive addresses are found automatically instead of pasted one by one.

The privacy trade
The same power cuts back: whoever has your xpub can see every address and every balance, forever. An address leaks one thread; an xpub leaks the whole fabric. Treat it as sensitive, share it only with software you actually trust, and remember that revoking an xpub is not a thing, only moving the funds is.
