What is Wallet?

A crypto wallet is not a container. It is a pair of keys and the software that uses them: a private key that signs transactions and a public address that receives them. The coins themselves never leave the blockchain; a wallet is the ability to move the ones assigned to your address, plus a view of them. Hardware wallets keep the private key on a small offline device, browser and phone wallets keep it on the machine you are using, and exchange accounts are not wallets at all but claims on balances someone else controls.

The distinction that matters day to day is hot versus cold. A hot wallet is connected to the internet, convenient for trading and for signing into applications, and exposed to whatever runs on that device. A cold wallet stays offline and signs only when you physically confirm on the device, which is slower and far safer for anything you intend to hold. Most experienced holders run both, with the cold wallet doing nothing but holding.

A wallet also has more than one address. Bitcoin wallets rotate receiving addresses under one seed; an Ethereum-style wallet uses one address across every EVM chain; multi-chain wallets such as Phantom keep a separate address per network. Tracking a wallet therefore means tracking addresses, and a complete view of your holdings starts with listing every address each wallet controls.

Reading a wallet needs none of its secrets. Every address is public, so balances, tokens, staking positions and history can be read by anyone with the string.
