What is TVL (Total Value Locked)?

TVL, total value locked, is the dollar value of assets deposited in a DeFi protocol or across a whole chain: liquidity in pools, collateral in lending markets, tokens in staking contracts. It is the most quoted measure of DeFi size, published by aggregators such as DefiLlama, and it is what people mean when they say a protocol or a chain is growing.

It is a stock, not a flow, and it is priced in dollars. That means TVL rises and falls with token prices even if no deposit or withdrawal happens, so a chart of TVL in a bull market mostly shows the price of the assets locked. Double counting is common when one protocol's deposit receipt is deposited in another. Comparing TVL between protocols with different designs says less than it seems.

For a user, a protocol's TVL is a rough proxy for two things: how much other people trust it with capital, and how deep its liquidity is for exiting a position. A lending market with a large TVL will absorb a withdrawal; a pool with a tiny TVL will move sharply when you leave. Neither is a safety guarantee.

Your own contribution to TVL is your DeFi book: the positions a tracker has to decode from contracts and count into net worth. Chain-level TVL adds one more layer of interpretation: it sums the protocols on a chain, and a chain can lead the ranking because a single protocol dominates it. It is useful as a trend within one chain over time, and weak as a comparison between chains with different mixes of lending, trading and staking.
