GlossaryDeFi
What is DeFi?
Decentralized finance: lending, trading, and yield products built from smart contracts instead of intermediaries. Anyone with a wallet can use them permissionlessly. The flip side of removing intermediaries is that code bugs, oracle failures and bad collateral become your counterparty risk.
DeFi, decentralized finance, is financial activity run by smart contracts instead of institutions: trading on automated market makers, lending and borrowing against collateral, earning yield on deposits, minting stablecoins, trading perpetuals. The rules are code, the accounts are addresses, and anyone can use a protocol without an application or a login. The counterparty is a contract, which removes some risks and creates others.
The building blocks compose. A stablecoin borrowed against ETH on a lending protocol can be deposited in a liquidity pool, whose share token can itself be staked for extra rewards. This is DeFi's strength and its accounting problem: one wallet with three transactions can hold six positions that reference each other, and the balance a block explorer shows is only the first layer.
Risks are specific. Smart contracts can have bugs or be exploited; collateralized loans can be liquidated when prices move; pools carry impermanent loss; yields advertised as APY can vanish when incentives end. None of this is hidden, but it is spread across protocol dashboards that each show only their own slice.
Tracking DeFi means decoding positions rather than counting tokens. A liquidity-pool share has to be read as the two assets it represents, a lending deposit as principal plus accrued interest, a staked balance as the underlying asset. TrueHold decodes positions by protocol, groups them as liquidity, lending and staking, shows the rates on them, and counts the lot into the same total as wallets and exchanges.
DeFi's composability is also why positions vanish from view in a downturn. Incentive programs end, pools thin out, a protocol pauses, and a position that was worth a clear number becomes worth whatever an exit through a thin pool would fetch. The honest habit is to know how you would unwind every position, in which order, and how deep the exit is, before you need to.
