GlossaryMemecoin

What is Memecoin?

A token whose value proposition is attention itself: a joke, a mascot, a moment. A few become durable communities; the overwhelming majority round-trip to zero, often with concentrated insider supply doing the selling. Size positions accordingly.

A memecoin is a token whose value rests on attention rather than on use: a joke, a mascot, a moment on social media, turned into a tradable asset in minutes. Dogecoin started the genre; launchpads on Solana and Base industrialised it, so that thousands of new memecoins appear every day and a handful reach real market caps. They are the purest form of crypto as a betting market.

The mechanics are worth understanding even for people who never buy one. A memecoin is typically an ordinary token with no product, a supply held disproportionately by early wallets, and a liquidity pool that can be tiny. Price moves are driven by flow: new buyers push the pool, early holders sell into them, and the chart tells the story with a lag.

The risks are concentrated in the launch. Rug pulls, where the creator removes liquidity or dumps the supply, are the common ending; honeypots, where the contract prevents selling, are the malicious one. Token safety scanners check mint and freeze authority and liquidity locks precisely because these tricks are standard.

In a portfolio, memecoins create two accounting problems. Their printed price often reflects a pool too thin to sell into, so a holding's marked value is optimistic; and wallets that ever touched a launchpad fill with airdropped tokens worth nothing. Both inflate a naive total.

A tracker has to price against real liquidity and filter the junk. TrueHold hides spam and dust below a threshold you set and prices what remains from venues with real markets, so a memecoin that is genuinely worth something shows, and the hundred that are not stay out of the total.

If you do trade them, size for a total loss and treat any gain as realised only once it is in a stablecoin or a major asset. The chart of a memecoin that went to zero looks exactly like the chart of one that went up, right until it does not.
