What is Liquidity?

Liquidity is how much of an asset can be bought or sold without moving its price. A liquid market has many resting orders near the current price, so a large trade fills close to where it started; an illiquid one has a few thin orders, so the same trade walks the price away from you. The listed price of an asset is only meaningful with the liquidity behind it.

It lives in two places. On order-book venues, liquidity is the depth of bids and asks around the mid price, visible in the book. On automated market makers it is the size of the pool: a swap against a small pool moves the price a lot, which shows up as slippage. In both cases liquidity comes and goes with volatility, and it thins out exactly when everyone wants to trade at once.

For a holder the practical questions are two. Can this position be sold at anything like the marked price, and across which venues? A token with a hundred-dollar market cap and a printed price is not worth its printed price, and a large holding of even a real asset may need to be sold in pieces.

Portfolio valuation quietly assumes liquidity. TrueHold prices assets from venues with real markets, treats stablecoins at one dollar, and filters tokens whose only price is a stale print, so the total reflects what could actually be sold rather than what a screenshot claims.

Liquidity also has a time dimension. A market that absorbs a sale on a quiet afternoon may not absorb it during a crash, when spreads widen and pools drain. Positions sized for calm conditions are the ones that get sold at the worst prices, which is why experienced holders think about exit size relative to typical daily volume, not just relative to the portfolio.
