GlossaryValidator
What is Validator?
A staked node in a proof-of-stake network that proposes and attests blocks, earning rewards for honest work and losing stake ("slashing") for provable misbehavior. Delegating to a validator means sharing its rewards, and its slashing risk.
A validator is a node that takes part in producing and confirming blocks on a proof-of-stake chain. It holds a stake, its own or delegated, runs the software that proposes and attests to blocks, and earns rewards in proportion to its stake and its uptime. On Ethereum a validator is a 32 ETH deposit; on Solana, TON and Hyperliquid it is an operator with delegated stake from many holders.
Delegation is how most people take part. Instead of running a machine, a holder delegates stake to a validator, shares in its rewards, and takes on its performance and its commission. Choosing one is a small due-diligence exercise: uptime, commission rate, how much stake it already controls, and whether it has ever been slashed.
Concentration is the quiet risk. When a few validators hold most of the stake, the chain is less decentralised than its marketing suggests, and delegating to the largest operator because it is the largest makes that worse. Many chains and explorers publish stake distribution for exactly this reason.
Validator economics also show up in a portfolio as yield with conditions: rewards accrue on a schedule, unbonding takes days or weeks, and a validator that goes offline earns less or gets penalised. A staked balance is therefore a position with terms, not cash, and its history has to be read with those terms in mind.
For tracking, the address is enough: delegations and rewards are public on every proof-of-stake chain. TrueHold reads stake accounts and delegations by address and counts them into the underlying asset's position, so a holder sees staked and liquid amounts together with the rate they earn.
Rewards are also where staking goes wrong quietly: a validator with a high commission or frequent downtime can turn an advertised yield into a fraction of it. Comparing actual rewards received against the headline rate, over a few months, is the only check that counts.
