GlossaryTake profit

What is Take profit?

An order that closes a position automatically at a target price above your entry: the exit half of a plan made in advance. Pairing take-profits with stop-losses turns a hunch into a defined risk-reward trade and removes the hardest part: selling when it feels too early.

A take-profit is an order that closes a position automatically when the price reaches a level above your entry: the mirror of a stop-loss, and the part of a plan most traders skip. It turns an unrealised gain into a realised one without asking you to decide in the moment, which is exactly when deciding is hardest.

The mechanics are the same as any conditional order. On exchanges and perp venues a take-profit is a limit or a trigger order resting until the price arrives; on chain it is a limit order on a DEX that supports them or an automation that submits the swap. Partial take-profits, selling a fraction at several levels, are common and turn one decision into a schedule.

Taking profit has a tax dimension that a price target ignores. Every sale realises a gain against the cost basis of the lots sold, so the method used to pick lots, and the country you file in, decide how much of the gain is kept. A plan that sells in tranches across tax years can be worth more than a plan that sells better.

The mistake on the other side is never taking any. Unrealised gains are a number on a screen; realised gains are money. Portfolios that rode an asset up and back down usually had a level in mind and no order at it. Writing the level down and placing the order is the whole difference.

A tracker shows the inputs: unrealised gain per position against its cost basis, realised gains so far, and how much of the portfolio one asset has grown to be. TrueHold does not place the order, being read-only, but it makes the size of the decision visible next to everything else you hold.

Partial exits also solve the psychological problem: selling a third at a target keeps you in the trade and takes the pressure off the rest. The plan does not need to be clever, only written down before the move happens and executed by an order rather than by a mood.
